A 1994 batch senior IPS officer Nirmal Kumar Azad of Bihar cadre has been appointed as a police observer for Bhabanipur assembly constituency by the Election Commission of India, where Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamta Banerjee is contesting a by-election.
The by-poll will be held on September 30 along with the elections to two seats in Samserganj and Jangipur which is situated in Murshidabad district where polling was countermanded during the eight-phase assembly elections conducted earlier this year due to the death of candidates.
According to the officials, the EC has also appointed IAS officers G Prakash of 2000 batch and S Chockalingam of 1996 batch as general observers for Samserganj and Jangipur respectively.
