The Union Public Service Commission has made its amendment in its guidelines in regards with the appointment of DGP of any state. Under the, IPS officer with minimum six months of service will be eligible to be given charge of DGP in a State. Besides this, the empanelment committee by the UPSC won’t consider or evaluate officers on central deputation for the post of DGP, unless Union Ministry of Home Affairs clears them be relieved from the current responsibilities.
All these were considered as unwritten norms till now but with these amendments it will be explicit. These guidelines were issued in September and then sent to the states now. Under these new guidelines, officers with 25 years of experience can also be appointed as a DGP. Earlier, the minimum experience required was of 30 years.
These guidelines came at a time when some states have appointed DGPs on the brink of their retirement or appointed acting DGPs to avoid the selection process of UPSC
