JAMMU: In a significant development, J&K-AGMUT cadre IPS officer Shailendra Mishra has been granted an extension in his deputation period as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Mishra is presently posted as DIG at the NIA Branch Office in Mumbai, one of the agency’s key operational centers.
According to the official order, issued under the Ministry of Home Affairs (Police-I Division) OM No. 1.21013/33/2025.IPS-III dated November 7, 2025, the deputation period of Dr. Shailendra Mishra, IPS (AGMUT: 2009), has been extended for one year beyond April 4, 2026, bringing his total tenure in the NIA to six years or until further orders, whichever comes earlier. The order was confirmed by Cross Town News.
This extension highlights the government’s emphasis on maintaining continuity in leadership roles in strategic agencies tasked with national security and counter-terror operations.
Career and Background
A 2009-batch IPS officer, Shailendra Mishra has had a distinguished career in Jammu & Kashmir prior to moving on central deputation. He has served as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Udhampur, Kathua, and Shopian, where he gained extensive experience in law enforcement, counter-insurgency operations, intelligence-led policing, and public safety management.
Since joining the NIA, Mishra has been instrumental in leading high-profile investigations, including complex terror-related cases, organized crime probes, and coordination with state and central agencies. His work has significantly contributed to the agency’s mandate of counter-terrorism and national security.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Mishra has been conferred the Union Home Minister’s Medal for Special Operations in 2024, for operations that led to the arrest of dreaded terrorists and the dismantling of an entire terror module, thereby safeguarding public peace and security.
Significance of Extension
The extension reflects the government’s confidence in Mishra’s professional abilities and leadership. Continuity in his role is particularly vital for the Mumbai NIA branch, which handles a high volume of sensitive cases, including counter-terror operations in Maharashtra and western India.
With the renewed tenure, Shailendra Mishra will continue to oversee critical investigations, supervise operational strategies, and mentor key officers, thereby strengthening the NIA’s investigative capabilities. Analysts note that such extensions ensure stability in leadership within central security agencies, which is crucial for executing long-term counter-terror initiatives and maintaining operational effectiveness.
This move further emphasizes the importance of experienced IPS officers in pivotal central deputation roles, enhancing India’s capacity to respond to complex security challenges while ensuring the rule of law and public safety.
