Hyderabad: In a major administrative reshuffle, the Telangana government on Saturday appointed Vishwanath Channappa Sajjanar (V C Sajjanar), a senior IPS officer, as the new Police Commissioner of Hyderabad. The move is part of a wider state-level reshuffle involving several IPS and IAS officers. C V Anand, the outgoing Hyderabad Police Commissioner, has been transferred and posted as Special Chief Secretary to the Government in the Home Department.
Extensive Policing Experience Across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
V C Sajjanar is a 1996-batch IPS officer originally from the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh cadre, who was allotted to Telangana after the bifurcation. His policing career spans nearly three decades, during which he has held several key positions across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Sajjanar began as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Jangaon (Warangal district) and Pulivendula (Kadapa district). He was later promoted to Superintendent of Police (SP), serving in five critical districts — Nalgonda, Kadapa, Guntur, Warangal, and Medak.
In addition, Sajjanar has served as SP for the Crime Investigation Department’s Economic Offences Wing and led OCTOPUS (Organization for Countering Terrorist Operations). He was also Commandant of the 6th Battalion APSP in Mangalagiri. Upon promotion to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Inspector General (IG) ranks, he worked in the Intelligence Department until March 2018.
Tenure as Cyberabad Commissioner and TSRTC Managing Director
From March 2018 to August 2021, Sajjanar served as Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad, where he gained recognition for handling sensitive cases and focusing on community policing. Following his tenure in Cyberabad, he was appointed Managing Director of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) in September 2021. His leadership at TSRTC was noted for efforts to improve the corporation’s performance and services.
Notable Incidents and Law Enforcement Leadership
V C Sajjanar’s career has been marked by involvement in some high-profile and sensitive cases. In 2008, as the Superintendent of Police in Warangal district, he oversaw police action in the infamous Warangal acid attack case involving two female engineering students. The accused were shot by police in self-defense after attacking the victims.
Similarly, in the 2019 Hyderabad gangrape and murder case, Sajjanar, then Commissioner of Cyberabad Police, confirmed the police’s decision to shoot the accused in self-defense, which was widely reported and discussed nationally.
Early Life and Education
Born on 24 October 1968 in Hubballi, Karnataka, V C Sajjanar is the son of Channappa and Girija. He completed his early education at Lions English Medium School, Hubballi. Sajjanar holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from J.G. College of Commerce, affiliated with Karnatak University, Dharwad. He also earned an MBA from Kousali Institute of Management Studies, Dharwad. After clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 1996, Sajjanar joined the Indian Police Service and has since been serving in law enforcement.
Appointment Marks New Chapter in Hyderabad Policing
Sajjanar’s appointment as Hyderabad Police Commissioner comes at a time when the Telangana government is focusing on enhancing law enforcement capabilities, community policing, cybercrime management, and safety of vulnerable groups such as women and children. His extensive experience in policing and administration is expected to bring renewed focus and strategic direction to Hyderabad’s police force.
