On Thursday, the Ministry of Steel issued an official order confirming the appointment of Amitava Mukherjee as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NMDC Limited. This appointment follows the ratification of the decision by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on March 5, 2025.
Mr Mukherjee is a 1995-batch officer of the Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS).

Term of Appointment
Amitava Mukherjee’s appointment is effective immediately, and he will serve as the CMD of NMDC until his superannuation on February 29, 2028.
Previous Role and Interim Responsibility
Before this formal appointment, Mukherjee, who was serving as the Director of Finance at NMDC, had been holding the additional charge of CMD following the retirement of Sumit Deb on January 31, 2023. Since then, NMDC Limited has been functioning under an ad-hoc arrangement, with Mukherjee stepping in to lead the organization.
This appointment marks a significant development for NMDC Limited, as the company moves forward with a permanent leadership structure under Mukherjee’s guidance. His leadership will continue to steer the company during this extended period as NMDC navigates through various growth and strategic initiatives.
