IRS officer Jomy Jacob, successfully completed the Ironman Copenhagen challenge on Sunday, one of the world’s most demanding triathlon races. The event, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, saw over 3,000 participants from more than 68 countries.
The Ironman challenge consists of a 3.8 km swim, 180 km cycling, and a 42 km marathon run. Jacob began his race at 7:20 AM on August 18 and completed the rigorous event in 13 hours and 27 minutes. A certified mountaineer and endurance athlete, the 39-year-old IRS officer took on this challenge despite not knowing how to swim just a year and a half ago.
Jacob trained for the swimming portion of the triathlon in the Periyar River, overcoming his initial fear of water. An avid cyclist, he regularly cycled from Kakkanad to Athirappally and Kuthiran on Sundays as part of his preparation. He also incorporated indoor cycling with a trainer that simulates outdoor riding conditions. In addition to his cycling and swimming training, Jacob is a marathon enthusiast and maintained his running fitness through his involvement with local running clubs.
Jacob, who serves as the Additional Commissioner (Customs Preventive) in Kochi, is no stranger to endurance events. He has previously completed the Comrades Ultramarathon in South Africa and participated in several high-altitude mountaineering expeditions. His dedication to endurance athletics is supported by his family, who played a crucial role in his preparation for this event.
