New Delhi: In a significant administrative development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed IRS Vivek Chaturvedi as a Member of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).
Mr Chaturvedi, a 1990-batch IRS-C&IT officer, is currently serving as the Principal Director General of Vigilance and Chief Vigilance Officer at CBIC. He will succeed Vivek Ranjan, Member (Tax Policy & Legal), who completed his tenure on August 31, 2025.
Major Leadership Transition at CBIC
Chaturvedi’s elevation comes at a time of notable leadership transition within the CBIC. In addition to Vivek Ranjan’s departure, two more senior members — including the current CBIC Chairman — are set to retire on November 30, 2025.
This makes Chaturvedi’s appointment the first in a series of expected changes at the top echelons of India’s indirect tax administration over the coming months.
Vigilance Background and Policy Expertise
With a strong background in vigilance, compliance, and tax administration, Chaturvedi is seen as a capable and experienced officer to help steer the CBIC through its policy refinement and compliance enhancement agenda.
His previous role as the Chief Vigilance Officer is particularly significant, as it highlights the government’s continued emphasis on transparency, internal oversight, and integrity within its tax institutions.
Continuity Amid Evolving Tax Landscape
Chaturvedi’s appointment underscores the Centre’s focus on ensuring stability and continuity in leadership amid an evolving regulatory landscape shaped by ongoing GST reforms, tightening of compliance frameworks, and greater digitization in customs processes.
With over three decades in service, his experience is expected to contribute significantly to the streamlining of indirect tax policies and strengthening enforcement mechanisms under CBIC’s mandate.
