Ranchi: The Jharkhand Industry Department is emphasizing the development of handicrafts and the skill enhancement of local artisans. With modern training, technical support, and resource materials, the department aims to empower artisans and align their work with contemporary market demands.
Advanced Training for Artisans
In the upcoming financial year, 270 artisans across the state will receive advanced training under various trades at handicraft resource centers. The training will focus on upgrading skills and improving productivity to meet market requirements, while also modernizing traditional craft techniques.
To support this, the Jharkhand Institute of Craft Design (JICD) will operate in Ranchi, established in collaboration with the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. Faculty, technical staff, and other personnel appointments are currently underway.
Infrastructure and Handicraft Centers
Currently, the state operates eight handicraft centers, which are scheduled for upgradation to provide better facilities for training and production. Under the Training and Artisan Employment Program, tools and equipment will be distributed to artisans with 75% government subsidy, helping them improve their craft output efficiently.
The Jharkhand State Khadi Board is also planning the renovation of old emporiums to promote khadi textiles and implement an integrated development plan for the sector.
Focus on Traditional and Cottage Industries
The government is supporting traditional cottage industries under the Chief Minister Small and Cottage Industry Development Board, including:
- Leaf/plate manufacturing
- Pickle production
- Leather crafts
- Laha and Tasar-based industries
Jharkhand’s rich handicraft production also includes terracotta, bamboo and cane crafts, Dhokra, painting, and jewelry, which will benefit from modern technical training, financial support, and marketing facilities. Approximately 2,500 entrepreneurs will benefit from skill enhancement programs, while 2,000 artisans will receive tools and machinery under subsidized schemes.
Empowering Artisans and Clay Potters
A significant portion of Jharkhand’s population belongs to clay craft families, producing artistic items such as idols, pots, water jars, decorative elephants and horses, kulhads, diyas, and other decorative objects. Considering their economic needs, the government plans to provide technical assistance, financial aid, and marketing support to these artisans.
In the next financial year, 180 clay artisans will receive technical training in six batches. Additionally, 1,000 electric wheels and 200 pug mills will be distributed on a 90:10 subsidy basis to enhance production capabilities.
Market-Oriented Skill Development
By providing modern training, material support, and infrastructure improvements, the Jharkhand Industry Department aims to strengthen the handicraft sector, increase artisan incomes, and preserve the state’s rich cultural heritage. The program reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable artisan development and boosting local cottage industries.
