Ranchi: In a significant breakthrough in the fight against left-wing extremism, ten Naxalites, including three minors, surrendered before Jharkhand’s Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Gupta in Chaibasa. The surrender has been hailed as a major achievement by the police, signaling the nearing end of insurgency in the state. DGP Gupta expressed confidence that Jharkhand will be completely free of Naxal influence by December 2025.
DGP Anurag Gupta Speaks on Insurgency and Security Efforts
Addressing a press conference at the Superintendent of Police (SP) office in Chandali, DGP Anurag Gupta emphasized that the battle against militancy, which has spanned nearly two decades, is now at a decisive phase. He recalled the sacrifices made by over 500 police and paramilitary personnel in the struggle, acknowledging their role in moving Jharkhand towards peace and progress.
He revealed that only around 40-45 insurgents remain active in the state, with their hideouts and areas of influence effectively identified and under siege by security forces. According to him, militants now face two clear choices: surrender and reintegrate into society or face elimination.
Robust Surrender Policy and Appeal to Militants
The DGP praised Jharkhand’s surrender policy as the best in the country, designed to provide a fresh start for youth who have strayed into militancy. He urged those still engaged in violent activities to abandon the path of violence and embrace peace and development.
Expanding the Fight Against Crime
Besides counter-insurgency, DGP Gupta announced intensified action against drug trafficking and organized criminal gangs, which also threaten the state’s stability. Upcoming special operations aim to eradicate militancy as well as curb organized crime and drug abuse, setting Jharkhand on a trajectory of security and development.
Recent Operations Yield Substantial Success
The police’s concerted efforts in the past year have significantly weakened militant groups such as the CPI (Maoist), TSPC, JJMP, and TAPC. Between November 29, 2024, and September 23, 2025, security forces killed 33 Naxalites, secured the surrender of 20, and arrested 18 others.
Specifically, the CPI (Maoist) has been largely confined to the Saranda region, with 21 of its members killed, seven arrested, and four surrendering in the past ten months. The JJMP has been virtually eliminated with eight killed, 16 surrendered, and three arrested. TAPC militants have also suffered major losses with two killed and six arrested.
Looking Ahead
With militant groups increasingly cornered and their numbers dwindling, Jharkhand is moving closer to becoming an insurgency-free state. The government and police authorities remain committed to continuing their efforts to ensure peace, security, and socio-economic progress across the region.
