Ranchi: In a significant boost to road infrastructure in the state capital, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari virtually laid the foundation stone for two major National Highway projects worth ₹303 crore. The ceremony was held via video conferencing, while Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth formally initiated the projects on the ground in Ranchi.
The projects are aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion on two of the busiest corridors in the region—NH-33 (Ranchi–Jamshedpur route) and the Ranchi–Hazaribagh highway.
Key Projects: Underground Tunnel and Modern Overbridge
Under the approved plan, two major constructions will be undertaken:
- A modern underground tunnel at Rampur Chowk on NH-33 near the Ranchi–Jamshedpur route
- A state-of-the-art overbridge at Development Chowk in Irba on the Ranchi–Hazaribagh road
Both projects are designed to streamline vehicular movement, reduce traffic jams, and enhance road safety in accident-prone stretches.

Project Cost and Timeline
The combined cost of these two National Highway projects is estimated at ₹303 crore. According to officials, the construction work is expected to be completed within two years.
Authorities believe the infrastructure upgrades will significantly improve connectivity between Ranchi and nearby industrial and residential regions.
Rapid Approval Highlighted by Officials
Speaking at the event, Sanjay Seth noted that both locations had long been identified as traffic congestion and accident-prone zones. He emphasized that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) was prepared and approved within just 15 days of raising the issue with the central leadership.
He expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Union Minister for the swift clearance of the projects.
Ongoing Road Development in Jharkhand
Seth also shared details of ongoing and upcoming road infrastructure projects in Jharkhand, stating that works worth around ₹45,000 crore covering more than 1,500 km of roads are currently underway in the state.
Key developments include:
- 90% completion of the Gola–Ormanjhi road project
- Approval of Ormanjhi flyover
- Construction of three underpasses at Ghoraling, Phuldungri, and Baharagora
- Bridge construction over the Chilgu River, targeted for completion by 2027
- Ongoing rail overbridges in Itki and Chandil
- Upcoming road widening in Charhi and Chutupalu Valley
- Active work on Ranchi–Mahulia and Koderma–Meghatari projects
Future Plans: ₹17,000 Crore New Road Projects
The Union Minister also announced that Jharkhand is set to receive additional road projects worth ₹17,000 crore, including around 450 km of new road construction.
This package also includes a key segment of the Varanasi–Kolkata Expressway, which is expected to strengthen regional trade and connectivity.
Proposed Outer Ring Road for Ranchi
A major highlight of future planning is the proposed 6000 crore Outer Ring Road project in Ranchi, spanning 195 km. The Detailed Project Report for this ambitious project has already been prepared.
Officials said the project will help decongest city traffic and support long-term urban expansion.
Focus on National Connectivity and Economic Growth
Authorities highlighted that India is currently building approximately 34 km of roads per day, contributing nearly 15,000 km annually to the national network. These efforts, they said, are helping strengthen India’s position as a fast-growing global economy.
Concerns Raised Over Toll Plaza Operations
During the event, local representatives raised concerns regarding alleged irregular toll collection at Bundu, Ormanjhi, and Tarup toll plazas.
In response, officials directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to strictly enforce the 60 km toll rule and remove violations where applicable. Plans for an overbridge at Shastri Chowk in Ormanjhi were also discussed to address traffic congestion and accident risks.
Local Leaders React
Several public representatives welcomed the projects while also raising concerns about delayed execution of previously announced schemes.
- Some legislators emphasized the need to keep government infrastructure events free from political bias
- Others highlighted delays in earlier road construction works
- Officials reiterated that improved connectivity would also help reduce migration and human trafficking risks in the region
Ranchi Mayor and Deputy Mayor, along with former legislators and senior officials, were present at the event.
The launch of these ₹303 crore highway projects marks another step in accelerating infrastructure development in Jharkhand. With multiple road expansion initiatives already underway and several new projects planned, Ranchi is set to witness significant improvements in connectivity, traffic management, and regional economic growth over the coming years.
