Patna: Bihar’s famed litchi, particularly the Shahi variety known for its succulent pulp and unique sweetness, has achieved a historic milestone in 2025. A record 250 tonnes of the fruit have been exported from Darbhanga airport to major Indian metro cities—marking a 108% increase over last year’s figure of 120 tonnes.
This surge in exports signifies not only increased production but also improved access for farmers to larger markets through the support of air cargo services.
Metro Cities Get a Taste of Bihar’s Sweetest Fruit
This year, Bihar’s litchis made their way to Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, with consignments largely dominated by the sought-after Shahi litchi, grown in Muzaffarpur and parts of Samastipur. These regions boast optimal agro-climatic conditions for cultivating the aromatic and juicy fruit.
The move has opened lucrative markets for farmers and traders in the state, bringing national visibility to Bihar’s premium horticultural produce.
Airlines Play a Key Role in Smooth Transportation
The record-setting exports began after the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) cleared the first shipment on May 20. The very next day, SpiceJet sent its first cargo to Mumbai. Later, Indigo Airlines and Akasa Air also joined the initiative, ensuring a steady flow of consignments through May and June.
Breakdown of shipments:
- Indigo Airlines: 159.2 tonnes
- SpiceJet: 47 tonnes
- Akasa Air: 44.5 tonnes
Airports Authority of India’s Role Commended
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and its subsidiary AAICLAS, alongside airline staff and Eastern Regional Headquarters (RHQ-ER), worked in coordinated fashion to overcome weather challenges and logistical hurdles. Their collective effort ensured timely and safe transportation of this perishable commodity.
Farmers Benefit from Enhanced Market Access
This initiative has created significant opportunities for litchi growers in north Bihar by reducing spoilage, ensuring quicker deliveries, and fetching better prices in urban markets. Experts believe such cargo support will transform the agri-export landscape of Bihar.
