Mumbai: Justice Shree Chandrashekhar took oath as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on Friday, marking a significant milestone in a judicial career spanning more than three decades.
The ceremony was held at Raj Bhavan, where Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office. Dignitaries present included Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, and State Director General of Police Rashmi Shukla.
Judicial Elevation and Appointment
The Ministry of Law and Justice had earlier announced his appointment, which was formally approved by the President of India following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium on August 25, 2025. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed the development, highlighting that the appointment was made in consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
Justice Chandrashekhar previously served as a senior judge of the Bombay High Court. His elevation follows a series of significant roles across multiple High Courts, reflecting both experience and judicial integrity.

Legal Career and Early Practice
Born on 24 January 1966, Justice Chandrashekhar enrolled as an advocate with the Delhi State Bar Council on December 9, 1993. Over 19 years of practice, he handled nearly 3,500 cases, with around 140 of them later reported as Supreme Court judgments. His practice spanned both civil and criminal matters.
He served as Standing Counsel for several institutions and boards, including the AICTE, State of Jharkhand, Bihar State Housing Board, Bihar State Pollution Control Board, Jharkhand State Electricity Board, and ICAR. His extensive legal practice cemented his reputation as a versatile and dependable lawyer before his judicial elevation.
Judicial Journey Across High Courts
Justice Chandrashekhar was appointed Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court on January 17, 2013, and became a permanent judge on June 27, 2014. He later assumed the role of Acting Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on December 29, 2023.
In July 2024, he was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court, before being moved to the Bombay High Court in July 2025. His judicial journey reflects steady progression through critical responsibilities across states, culminating in his appointment as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.
