The Karnataka government has appointed retired IPS officer Ashit Mohan Prasad as the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) after a prolonged delay of over six months. Alongside him, seven individuals, including senior journalists and a retired IAS officer, have been named as information commissioners. The official notification regarding these appointments was issued on Thursday.
The newly appointed Information Commissioners include journalists Rudranna Hartikote, K Badruddin, and S Rajshekhar, along with K Raman, Dr. Harish Kumar, and former IAS officer B R Mamatha.
The prolonged vacancy in these positions had led to a significant backlog of cases under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, delaying the resolution of appeals. The CIC post had been unfilled since the retirement of N.C. Srinivas in June last year. Currently, the Bengaluru bench alone has over 55,000 pending cases, as per Karnataka Information Commission officials.
