Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has appointed senior IAS officer Manivannan P. (IAS: 1998) as the new Commissioner of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), in addition to his current role as Principal Secretary, Social Welfare Department. The decision comes into effect from May 31, as per the official government notification.
Succeeds Jayaram N., Who Retires Today
Manivannan replaces Jayaram N., the outgoing BDA Commissioner, who retires from service on May 31. The move places Manivannan at the helm of one of the state’s most critical urban development bodies at a time when key projects in Bengaluru are under public scrutiny.
Assumes Charge Amid Key Urban Challenges
The BDA is facing mounting criticism for the slow pace of development in Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout, one of its flagship housing projects. Additionally, the recently announced skydeck project at Kengeri, meant to attract tourism and investment, is set to be rolled out under Manivannan’s watch.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has emphasised the urgency of expediting these projects, positioning the BDA as a key player in reshaping Bengaluru’s urban landscape.
Pressure Mounts Over Urban Sprawl and Planning Deficits
Both the BDA and BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) have been criticised for allowing unregulated urban sprawl and granting development permissions without ensuring supporting infrastructure. The new Commissioner will be expected to address these concerns and improve the BDA’s public image and effectiveness.
Mr Manivannan, known for his administrative acumen and public engagement efforts in previous postings, brings experience and reform-oriented leadership that many hope will be a game-changer for BDA’s functioning.
