Bengaluru: Dr. Nagalakshmi Chaudhary, Chairperson of the Karnataka State Women’s Commission, has issued a strong warning against anyone violating women’s dignity in connection with the ongoing Dharmasthala case. The warning follows complaints by women’s rights activists concerning unresolved incidents, including the high-profile murders of Soujanya and Vedavalli.
SIT Investigation in Progress, Security Measures Recommended
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues its probe into the case, with the Commission pledging full support for the victims. Addressing concerns raised by Ananya Bhat’s mother regarding safety during repeated questioning, Chaudhary confirmed that she has recommended security arrangements be provided by the SIT. She urged the public to stay patient and await the investigation’s findings before drawing conclusions.

Crackdown on False Allegations and Defamation
Chaudhary also condemned defamatory remarks made by Girish Mattannannavar and noted complaints filed by Bhaskar Prasad on behalf of Vijayalakshmi. She emphasized that protecting women’s dignity goes beyond individual cases and assured swift action against anyone spreading false information or harming the reputation of women involved in the matter.
Arrests and Social Media Warning
To date, eight people have been arrested in connection with the case. The Commission chief issued a caution to social media users against posting derogatory comments about women, stating that such behavior can lead to imprisonment of up to three years. While supporting free speech, she stressed that it should never come at the cost of respect for women.
Retired IPS Officer Bhaskar Rao Questions Chaudhary’s Role
Meanwhile, retired IPS officer Bhaskar Rao publicly criticized Nagalakshmi Chaudhary, accusing her of overstepping her authority by occupying a Sub-Inspector’s chair in a police station. Rao argued that only senior officials or ministers are permitted such privileges and called Chaudhary’s behavior “arrogant and inappropriate.”
Demand for Resignation
Rao further claimed that Chaudhary lacks the administrative expertise to lead the Women’s Commission effectively and demanded her immediate removal or voluntary resignation. Chaudhary has yet to respond to these allegations. The controversy raises questions about the future functioning and credibility of the Karnataka State Women’s Commission.
