Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant move, the Kerala government has extended the tenure of retired IAS officer Sheik Pareeth as the Managing Director of the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC). This extension, issued on December 19, comes despite Pareeth crossing the usual age limit for holding such posts.
Tenure Extension Beyond Age Limit
While the standard maximum age limit for IAS officers serving as heads of public sector institutions is 65, Sheik Pareeth, now 67, has had his term extended upon his own request. The government has, in the past, repeatedly revised his term, reflecting confidence in his leadership.
Pareeth cited ongoing projects under KSCADC as the reason for his request, warning that his stepping down at this critical juncture could hamper their implementation. In his letter to Minister Saji Cherian, he emphasized the importance of continuity for the successful execution of these initiatives.
Career and Service at KSCADC
Sheik Pareeth first assumed charge as Managing Director of KSCADC in 2018. Since then, his tenure has been extended every year, allowing him to oversee various developmental projects along Kerala’s coastline. His leadership has been considered crucial in steering the corporation through its strategic initiatives, according to sources within the government.
Government’s Decision and Implications
Following Pareeth’s letter and the assessment of ongoing projects, the cabinet approved the one-year extension, signaling the state’s prioritization of stability and continuity in key public sector roles. Experts note that such extensions, although beyond standard age limits, are common for IAS officers managing critical state-run institutions.
The decision underscores the government’s trust in Pareeth’s administrative capabilities and reflects the importance of continuity in infrastructure and coastal development projects.
