The Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the arrest of Rajan Khobragade, the state Health Secretary, in a contempt of court case. The court ordered the police to produce the senior IAS officer before it on January 20.
The directive came in response to a petition filed by Dr. B. Unnikrishnan, a physically challenged government employee, alleging contempt of court. The case revolves around a promotion dispute dating back to 2023 when Unnikrishnan petitioned the High Court for his rightful promotion. The court ruled in his favor, a decision later upheld by the Supreme Court after the state government filed an appeal and review petition.
Despite the judicial rulings, the state government failed to implement the promotion order, prompting the High Court to take stringent action. In September 2024, the court directed the state government to comply with its order. However, the noncompliance led to the issuance of an arrest order for Khobragade.
The High Court’s move underscores its strong stance against defiance of its directives. Legal experts see this as a significant reminder of the judiciary’s authority in ensuring adherence to its rulings.
