Background and Process
High Court judges in India are first appointed as Additional Judges for a period of two years before being considered for permanent appointments. Their performance, conduct, and judicial output during this period are assessed by the collegium before final elevation.
The Supreme Court Collegium — currently comprising CJI B.R. Gavai and senior judges Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, J.K. Maheshwari, and B.V. Nagarathna — plays a critical role in judicial appointments and transfers in the higher judiciary.
The Kerala High Court currently faces several vacancies, and these permanent appointments are expected to improve judicial efficiency and reduce case pendency.
