Truck and bus drivers who were protesting against the new ‘Hit & run Law called off their strike after two days. However, this wasn’t a miracle. The drivers ended the protest after Secretary of Home Ajay Kumar Bhalla convinced them and All India Motor Transport Congress that the law won’t be enforced without talking to them.
According to the new law, drivers who will be found guilty of causing a serious road accident by negligent driving and run away the scene without informing the police can face punishment of up to 10 years and a fine of Rs 7 lakh. Mr. Bhalla has promised AIMTC that the new law has not yet been implemented. It will be enforced after taking the view of AIMTC. He also called the drivers ‘Soldiers’ of our country.
Mr. Bhalla who hails from Bihar is an IAS officer of 1984 batch and Assam-Meghalaya cadre. He took the charge on 23 August 2019, succeeding Rajiv Gauba. Since then, the officer has been given three one year extension.
