Bhopal: The proposal for an elevated bridge along the metro corridor on Narmadapuram Road in Bhopal has come under renewed discussion. Initially planned from Barkatullah University to Misrod, the bridge is now being proposed to start from the Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute (AMPRI). This modification requires an additional ₹200 crore for project expansion.
Parallel Road Could Reduce Traffic Pressure
Urban planning experts suggest that instead of solely focusing on the elevated bridge, developing a parallel alternative road along the railway track could significantly reduce traffic on Narmadapuram Road by up to 40%.
- Elevated bridge budget: ₹500 crore
- Parallel road estimate: Less than ₹50 crore
This approach could save ₹450 crore in public funds for other developmental projects while improving accessibility for residential and commercial areas on both sides of the railway line, including Ishwar Nagar, CP Nagar, Bawadia Kalan, and Misrod villages.
Proposed Connectivity and Benefits
If a four-lane parallel road is constructed, it would provide direct connectivity from Ganesh Mandir to Misrod and onward to Mandideep, easing congestion on the Narmadapuram Road, which forms part of the National Highway.
Officials note that the parallel road would support multiple BDA projects planned along the railway line toward Misrod and Mandideep, enhancing regional development without overburdening Narmadapuram Road and surrounding areas such as Katara, Vidya Nagar, Narayan Nagar, and Jatkhedi.
Additionally, the route from AMPRI to Misrod includes four railway overbridges, improving commuting convenience between these areas.
State Government’s Broader Infrastructure Plans
Bhopal Development Authority (BDA) and the state government have announced several major infrastructure projects:
- 111 new railway overbridges across the state
- High-level bridge over Chambal River on Ater-Jaitpur Road
- Elevated corridors in Sant Hirdaram Nagar (Bhopal), Gwalior (Swarnarekha River), Indore, and Ujjain
- Four-lane elevated corridor in Ujjain
- Mahakal Ropeway project
Officials have clarified that the parallel road proposal is still under consideration, and further decisions will determine the next steps.
