The Madhya Pradesh Police Headquarters has sent a proposal to the Home Department, recommending that Superintendents of Police (SPs) be given the authority to assign Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) to sub-divisions within their districts. Currently, the Home Department holds the power to decide the transfer and posting of DSPs. Under the proposed system, the Home Department will assign DSPs to districts, while SPs will have discretion over their placement within the district.

This proposal has divided the officers of the State Police Service into two factions. While senior officers support the move, officers from the 2015 to 2018 batches are opposing it. Proponents argue that this will streamline decision-making, expedite postings, and enhance law and order management, much like how Collectors assign Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs). Opponents, however, fear that it could lead to increased political interference and compromise impartiality in policing.
In smaller districts of Madhya Pradesh, there are usually 5 to 7 DSPs, whereas larger districts may have more than 10. The new system is expected to speed up transfers and allow quick resolution of law and order challenges. However, a section of officers has expressed strong opposition on social media and even submitted a memorandum (without signatures) demanding that the process should require IG-level approval to ensure neutrality.
While the state government is likely to implement the system from April, concerns remain about its potential impact on police autonomy and governance. The decision is set to reshape how law enforcement is managed at the district level in Madhya Pradesh.
