Bengaluru: In a heartfelt move recognizing the service and legacy of late IAS officer Mahantesh Bilagi, the Karnataka government has approved a government job for his daughter, Chaitanya Mahantesh Bilagi. The appointment comes as a compassionate measure following the untimely demise of Bilagi, who was widely respected for his efficient and people-friendly administration.

Compassionate Appointment Cleared by State Cabinet

The Karnataka Cabinet treated the matter as a special case, approving Chaitanya Bilagi’s induction into the Karnataka Government Secretariat Service. She is set to be appointed to a ministerial post, subject to verification of her educational credentials and other formal procedures. Officials confirmed that the appointment process will commence shortly.

The cabinet cited the special circumstances surrounding Bilagi’s death as the basis for approving this compassionate employment, highlighting the government’s intent to provide moral and institutional support to the bereaved family.

Mahantesh Bilagi: From Humble Beginnings to IAS Officer

Born on March 27, 1974, in Ramdurg, Belagavi district, Mahantesh Bilagi rose from extreme poverty to reach the pinnacle of public service. After losing his father at a young age, his mother, Mahadevi, supported the family by working as a household help and selling rotis.

Despite these hardships, Bilagi excelled academically and first cleared the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) exams, securing the 4th rank. His determination and dedication paved the way for him to join the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 2012, Karnataka cadre.

Distinguished Career and Public Service

Throughout his career, Bilagi held multiple key positions and earned praise for his people-centric governance approach. Some of his notable roles included:

  • Managing Director, Karnataka State Minerals Corporation Limited (KSMCL): His last posting before his untimely demise.
  • Managing Director, BESCOM: Focused on streamlining power supply and addressing consumer grievances.
  • Deputy Commissioner, Davanagere: Renowned for urban development initiatives and strengthening public grievance systems.
  • CEO, Zilla Panchayats & Assistant Commissioner, Dharwad: Contributed significantly to local administration and governance.
  • Other Roles: Served in the Revenue Department, Food and Civil Supplies Department, and the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.

Bilagi’s tenure as District Collector of Davanagere was particularly celebrated for effective administration, public outreach, and implementation of the Smart City project. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic was lauded for efficiency and empathy.

Tragic Demise and Government Support

Mahantesh Bilagi passed away in a tragic road accident on November 25, 2025, near Kalaburagi while traveling to a family wedding. The car reportedly overturned when the driver tried to avoid a stray dog, claiming the lives of Bilagi, his brother Shankar, and two other relatives.

In the wake of his sudden death, Karnataka’s government recognized his exemplary service by granting his daughter, Chaitanya, a government job on compassionate grounds. The move has been widely appreciated as a gesture of moral and institutional support for the grieving family.

Legacy of Service and Inspiration

Bilagi’s life story serves as an inspiration to many, especially aspiring civil servants from rural and humble backgrounds. His journey from poverty to the Indian Administrative Service, coupled with his dedication to public welfare, leaves behind a legacy of integrity, efficiency, and empathy.

Colleagues, local leaders, and the Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remembered him as an “efficient and honest” officer deeply rooted in his community, whose sudden loss was mourned across the administrative and civil services community.
