New Delhi/Sikkim: NHPC Limited has announced a major development in the construction of the 500 MW Teesta-VI Hydroelectric Project in Sikkim. As of June 19, 2025, the project has achieved significant milestones in the Head Race Tunnel (HRT) segment – a core component of the hydropower facility.
According to project officials, the excavation of the HRT has now reached an impressive 11,000 meters, while the vital overt lining has covered 6,000 meters. The Head Race Tunnel is essential to channel water from the reservoir to the turbines, enabling power generation. These engineering achievements represent a critical leap forward in the completion of the project.
“Testament to Planning and Execution,” Says NHPC
A spokesperson for NHPC praised the work being carried out under challenging conditions. “These achievements on the Teesta-VI project highlight the hard work of our teams and the careful planning involved,” the official said. “The significant progress in HRT excavation and lining brings us closer to realizing the full potential of this 500 MW project, which will be crucial for the region’s energy security.”
The announcement signals that the hydropower giant is on track to meet its operational goals, despite the geographical challenges posed by Sikkim’s rugged Himalayan terrain.
Hydropower for a Sustainable Future
Once completed, the Teesta-VI Hydroelectric Project will play a vital role in boosting India’s renewable energy portfolio. As a source of clean, reliable, and locally generated power, it is expected to:
- Strengthen the regional power grid
- Reduce dependency on fossil fuels
- Support local socio-economic development
- Contribute to national energy security
The project’s strategic location in the Northeast also aligns with the government’s vision of regional development and sustainable infrastructure.
Focus on Safety and Efficiency Moving Forward
NHPC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficiency as it works to complete the remaining phases of the Teesta-VI project. The company is optimistic about continued progress and anticipates more positive updates in the near future.
With each milestone, the project edges closer to energizing thousands of households and industries across the region, reinforcing India’s commitment to harnessing renewable resources for a greener future.
