Sukma: A wave of grief swept through the Chhattisgarh police force as Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Akash Rao Giripunje (2013 batch PPS officer) was martyred in a deadly Naxalite attack on Monday morning. He was critically injured after stepping on a pressure IED (Improvised Explosive Device) planted by Maoists near Dondra village in the Konta-Errabore region of Sukma district. Despite immediate efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
A Routine Patrol Turned Fatal
In light of the Bastar Bandh called by Naxalites on June 10, ASP Giripunje had set out on a security patrol with his team to assess the situation and strengthen the presence of law enforcement in the vulnerable region. On the night before the incident, Naxalites had set a Poklane machine ablaze near NH-30, just 2 kilometers from Konta town. ASP Giripunje, accompanied by SDOP Bhanupratap Chandrakar and police station in-charge Sonal Gwala, proceeded to investigate the area.
After parking their vehicle on the national highway, the team ventured approximately 100 meters into the forested area on foot. Unknown to them, Maoists had laid a deadly trap – a pressure IED. As ASP Giripunje stepped on the device, it detonated with a devastating blast, fatally injuring him and severely wounding the officers nearby. The CRPF camp, merely a kilometer away, responded swiftly, but the damage was already done.

Bravery and Service: The Life of Akash Rao Giripunje
Akash Rao Giripunje, a native of Raipur, was known for his unwavering dedication to duty and integrity. He completed his schooling at Kalibari School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree from a local college in Raipur. Initially employed at UCO Bank, he never let go of his ambition to serve the nation in uniform. In 2013, he cleared the Chhattisgarh PCS examination and was inducted into the State Police Service as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
Over the years, his commitment and bravery earned him several gallantry awards. His rise through the ranks was marked by consistent valor, ultimately holding the position of Additional SP in one of the most Naxal-affected regions of India.
A Respected Leader and Compassionate Officer
The loss of ASP Giripunje has left a profound void among his team and superiors alike. According to police personnel present at the scene, he was not only a fearless officer but also deeply empathetic and respected. “He was like a brother to us,” said a teary-eyed constable from his unit. Upon hearing the news of his martyrdom, many of his colleagues wept openly. His mortal remains have been brought to Raipur for final rites with full state honors.

Security on High Alert Ahead of Bastar Bandh
The incident underscores the continuing threat posed by Naxalites in the Bastar region. In response, security forces have heightened surveillance and patrols across sensitive areas. Senior police officials have confirmed that injured officers, including SDOP Chandrakar and TI Sonal Gwala, have been airlifted to Raipur and are undergoing treatment.
The site of the ambush, near a seemingly peaceful road close to a CRPF camp, highlights the unpredictable and cunning nature of Naxal operations. Authorities fear more such traps may have been laid in anticipation of the June 10 Bastar Bandh.

Final Salute
ASP Akash Rao Giripunje’s sacrifice stands as a testament to the courage and resilience of India’s police forces working in some of the toughest terrains. His life journey – from a bank employee to a decorated officer martyred in the line of duty – will inspire generations to come.
The state mourns his loss, and preparations are underway to honor him with a full ceremonial guard of honor in Raipur.
