In the wake of a devastating cloudburst that struck Uttarkashi district earlier this week, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Mr. Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the affected areas on Friday to personally oversee rescue and relief operations. The disaster, which caused flash floods and landslides across Dharali village, has left the region in shock.
In an emotional moment captured on video, Mr. Dhami was seen consoling a distraught woman during his visit to the landslide-hit area. Assuring her of her safety, the Chief Minister said, “We have come here, please don’t worry. Everyone is safe now. People will come to take you. Do not cry, you have to be strong. We will help you reach back safely.”
Swift Rescue Response in Crisis
According to the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA), more than 800 personnel from the Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police are currently engaged in intensive rescue efforts across the region.
By Friday noon, 128 more people had been rescued, bringing the total number of rescued individuals to 566 since the cloudburst occurred on Tuesday. Torrents of mud and water swept away homes, hotels, and vehicles, turning the picturesque mountain village into a zone of utter destruction.
Fatalities and Missing Persons
Authorities have confirmed that four people have died in the floods. Two bodies were recovered on Wednesday. The USDMA has reported that 16 individuals remain missing, including nine Army personnel and seven civilians.
However, residents from nearby villages such as Mukhba suggest the actual number of missing could be higher. Local witnesses say that many laborers from Bihar and Nepal were working on under-construction hotels at the time, and there were guests staying in around two dozen large hotels in Dharali when the cloudburst struck.
Chief Minister Takes Charge on the Ground
Mr. Dhami has taken an active role in coordinating the relief operations, visiting survivors and monitoring the deployment of aid. His presence has brought a sense of reassurance to many affected families.
“The government is fully committed to ensuring every individual is accounted for and all possible help is provided,” Mr. Dhami said in a press briefing later in the day. He added that temporary shelters, food supplies, and medical aid are being arranged for those displaced by the disaster.
Next Steps
While rescue operations continue, officials are also assessing damage to infrastructure and are working to restore connectivity to remote areas that have been cut off by landslides and floodwaters.
The Uttarakhand government has appealed to citizens to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel in sensitive zones as rainfall continues to pose a threat.
As Uttarkashi begins to recover, the resilience of its people and the swift response from emergency services offer a glimmer of hope in the midst of destruction.
