Khandwa: The state of Madhya Pradesh is witnessing a landmark moment in its mission for water conservation as the closing ceremony of the 90-day ‘Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan’ unfolds today in Khandwa. The event, marking the culmination of one of the largest water conservation efforts in the country, will be graced virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav will lead the event on ground, inaugurating and performing bhoomi pujan of development works worth ₹1518 crore.
PM’s Virtual Address and Watershed Conference
The highlight of the event is the virtual address by PM Modi, underlining the national significance of this three-month campaign that began on March 30, 2025 from Ujjain, the city of Baba Mahakal. A Watershed Conference will also be held during the occasion, bringing together key stakeholders and experts in water resource management.
- ₹1518 Crore Worth of Projects Inaugurated
- Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav will inaugurate:
- 57,207 water conservation works under MNREGA worth ₹578.08 crore
- 888 watershed works worth ₹63.46 crore under the PM Agricultural Irrigation Scheme
- Launch of Watershed Work Management Software for monitoring and management
Additionally, four major irrigation projects by the Water Resources Department—Bham Rajgarh Medium Irrigation Project, Bihar Sarola Barrage, Lajera Barrage, and Hapla Deepla Minor Irrigation Project—will be inaugurated. These projects, costing ₹312.77 crore, will irrigate 8,557 hectares, directly benefiting 7,260 farmers across 21 villages.

Jawar Micro Lift Irrigation Scheme and Urban Works
The Jawar Micro Lift Irrigation Scheme by the Narmada Valley Development Department with administrative approval of ₹563.72 crore will also be formally announced. This scheme is set to benefit 21,666 farmers across 52 villages in Khandwa by irrigating 26,000 hectares of land.
In urban areas, 74 renovated water storage structures under the Amrit 2.0 scheme, developed at a cost of ₹50 crore, will be inaugurated.
Record-Breaking Achievements in Just 90 Days
The campaign has set multiple records:
- 84,930 farm ponds constructed, exceeding the target of 77,940
- 1,283 Amrit Sarovar under construction across districts
- 20,955 previously pending water-related works completed
- 1,04,294 recharge pits made—surpassing the original target of 1,03,000
These structures are already yielding results. The first monsoon rains have begun recharging wells and filling farm ponds, reflecting the effectiveness of the scientific approach adopted.
Tech-Driven Execution for Maximum Impact
For the first time in the state, modern technology such as SIPRI and Planner software was used to determine optimal locations for construction based on water flow patterns. This tech-driven planning led to rapid and large-scale construction of water conservation structures.
Top Performing Districts Recognized
- The top 10 performing districts in terms of implementation include:
- Khandwa, Balaghat, Raisen, Ujjain, Chhindwara, Burhanpur, Rajgarh, Ashoknagar, Betul, and Mandla
Their contributions played a key role in the campaign’s success and will serve as models for replication across the country.
