Kutch: Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Mines, has commenced augur drilling at the Nokhaniya Rare Earth Elements (REE) block in Gujarat’s Kutch district. The exploration is being carried out under the administrative control of the Baghewala Project.
This marks MECL’s first NMET-supported drilling initiative in Gujarat, representing a major step in critical mineral exploration in western India.

Strengthening India’s Critical Mineral Security
The Kutch region holds vast mineral wealth. It is already known for reserves of limestone, kaolin, bentonite, silica sand, bauxite, and lignite. With new prospects of lithium and rare earth elements, Kutch is emerging as a strategic hub for India’s clean energy ambitions.
MECL’s exploration at Nokhaniya aligns with the government’s goal of boosting domestic sourcing of critical minerals—vital for green energy technologies, electronics, and national self-reliance.
Scientific Push for Sustainable Resource Development
This drilling operation signals India’s growing focus on scientific and sustainable resource development. The effort not only strengthens India’s critical mineral supply chain but also highlights the geological potential of western India.
The project also underscores the expanding role of NMET (National Mineral Exploration Trust) in supporting advanced mineral exploration across the country.
