MGNREGA Sparks Sports Revolution in Bihar, 4,807 Village Grounds Developed in Two Years

Rural sports infrastructure under MGNREGA boosts youth fitness, community participation, and village-level development across Bihar

Patna: Bihar’s villages are witnessing a transformation beyond agriculture and labor, as the sound of running footsteps, claps, and the spirit of victory fills the air. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), apart from providing employment, is now nurturing a sports culture in rural Bihar. Under this initiative, the state has set up 4,807 sports grounds in the past two years, surpassing the number of gram panchayats earmarked for such development. Many panchayats now have more than one ground, giving young talent a platform to flourish.

Boosting Youth Engagement and Rural Fitness

The initiative aims to strengthen rural fitness and encourage youth participation in sports. In 2024, the Rural Development Department selected 4,716 panchayats out of 8,053 for sports ground development, with a target to build 5,341 grounds at a budget of ₹521.92 crore. By December 2025, approximately 90% of the target has been achieved, highlighting the efficient implementation of MGNREGA in promoting rural sports infrastructure.

Officials noted that these grounds have unearthed hidden sports talent in villages. Earlier, young athletes had to travel to cities for training, but now they have access to modern sports facilities within their villages. This has increased interest in sports while promoting discipline, health awareness, and substance-free lifestyles among rural youth.

Javed Ali Khan, State Programme Officer of MGNREGA, explained that the sports grounds are being developed in three categories to meet local needs.

Three Categories of Sports Grounds

  1. Category I: Up to 1 acre
  2. Category II: 1 to 5 acres
  3. Category III: Large complexes exceeding 4 acres

These grounds host regular sports competitions, fostering community participation and healthy competition. On average, the construction cost of a ground ranges from ₹10 lakh to ₹17 lakh. Currently, 534 projects are under construction, and work to mark land for remaining panchayats is progressing rapidly.

Facilities Available at Sports Grounds

  • Running tracks
  • Volleyball and badminton courts
  • Designated areas for cricket, football, kabaddi, and kho-kho
  • Basketball courts
  • Storerooms and boundary walls for safety

Statement from Minister

Shravan Kumar, Minister of Rural Development and Transport, said, “Sports grounds developed under MGNREGA are becoming a strong foundation for rural transformation. They not only help youth prepare for fitness standards required for army and other recruitment but also create employment at the village level and protect panchayat land. These grounds now symbolize self-reliance, health, and a brighter future in rural Bihar.”
