New Delhi: In a major step towards strengthening India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract worth ₹2,095.70 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of INVAR Anti-Tank Missiles. The agreement was inked under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category, reinforcing the government’s vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the defence sector.
The contract was formally signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh at South Block, New Delhi. Senior officials from the Ministry and representatives from BDL participated in the signing ceremony.
Missiles to Enhance Firepower of T-90 Tanks
The newly procured INVAR Anti-Tank Missiles are designed to significantly enhance the firepower and lethality of the T-90 tanks, which form the backbone of the Indian Army’s Armoured Regiments.
These laser-guided anti-tank missiles boast a high hit probability, capable of destroying heavily armoured enemy vehicles and fortifications. Their induction is expected to transform mechanised operations, providing the Indian Army with a critical operational edge in potential combat scenarios.
Boost to Indigenous Defence Capability
The procurement marks another milestone in India’s push towards indigenisation of defence systems. The deal leverages the expertise of Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) like BDL while promoting collaboration with domestic industries for the development of niche technologies.
According to the MoD, this initiative aligns with the broader goal of achieving strategic autonomy in defence manufacturing and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for critical weapon systems.
