Madhya Pradesh DGP Kailash Makwana’s Tenure Extended Until December 2026 Following Supreme Court Guidelines

Supreme Court Directives Ensure Minimum Two-Year Term for State Police Chiefs; Makwana Removed from 2025 IPS Retirement List to Continue Leading Madhya Pradesh Police
Indian Masterminds Stories

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Kailash Makwana will continue to hold his position for another year, with his tenure now extended until December 2026. This decision comes in accordance with the directives issued by the Supreme Court regarding minimum tenure for police chiefs.

Supreme Court Guidelines Ensure Minimum Two-Year Tenure for DGPs

The Home Department had earlier issued orders on November 23, 2024, regarding Makwana’s appointment as DGP starting December 1, 2024. Initially, his name was included in the list of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers scheduled to retire by December 2025. However, in line with the Supreme Court’s guideline that a state DGP should be allowed a minimum tenure of two years, Makwana’s name has now been removed from the retirement list.

The Supreme Court’s directive emphasizes stability in police leadership, stating that sudden changes at the top could affect law and order management and hinder long-term strategic initiatives. Following these instructions, the Madhya Pradesh Home Department clarified that Makwana will serve as DGP until December 2026.

Career and Contributions of DGP Kailash Makwana

Kailash Makwana, a 1988 batch IPS officer, has been a prominent figure in Madhya Pradesh policing. Over the years, he has overseen several major law and order operations, worked on modernizing the police force, and implemented effective strategies for crime prevention and public safety.

His extended tenure is expected to provide leadership continuity, allowing him to focus on long-term reforms and strategic initiatives within the state police.

Adjustment in Retirement List

The Home Department had previously published a list of 17 IPS officers scheduled to retire by December 31, 2025, which included Makwana’s name. However, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s instructions on minimum tenure and administrative adjustments, his continued leadership ensures adherence to judicial guidance and reinforces the stability of police administration in Madhya Pradesh.

Impact and Outlook

The extension has been welcomed by senior officials and police personnel alike, as it provides consistent leadership and strengthens the state’s law enforcement and governance frameworks. With Makwana at the helm, Madhya Pradesh police can continue strategic operations, maintain law and order efficiently, and implement long-term reforms without disruption.
