Major Administrative Changes Ahead: Chief Secretary, DGP Among 29 Officers Set to Retire Next Year in MP
Indian Masterminds Stories

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh is preparing for a significant reshuffle in its administrative machinery as 29 senior IAS and IPS officers are scheduled to retire next year. This includes officers holding critical positions such as DGP, Special DG, ADG, IG, DIG, and SP ranks.

The government has announced plans to urgently identify and appoint eligible officers to ensure smooth administration and uninterrupted governance across the state.

Chief Secretary and Key IAS Officers Retirement Updates

Chief Secretary Anurag Jain, who has already received a one-year extension, is expected to retire on September 30, 2026, if no further extension is granted. Other notable IAS officers slated for retirement include:

  • Shivpuri Collector Ravindra Kumar Chaudhary
  • Shahdol Collector Kedar Singh
  • Chambal Division Commissioner Suresh Kumar

Umakant Umrao, 1996 batch IAS officer and Principal Secretary of the Mineral Resources and Animal Husbandry Department, set to retire next August.

The question of Umakant Umrao receiving the Chief Secretary pay scale depends on the retirement of the current Chief Secretary and the return of officers posted at the Centre. If an Additional Chief Secretary-level officer returns from the Centre, Umrao’s pay scale might be affected.

Key IPS Positions Needing Successors

Among the retiring officers, the posts of ADG Intelligence and IG Law and Order hold particular importance. The government will need to identify capable IPS officers to fill these roles next year.

Similarly, in the IAS cadre, posts such as the Secondary Education Board head are also considered crucial, and senior IAS officers are expected to be appointed to these positions to maintain continuity in administration.

Overview of 2025 Retirements

In 2025, a total of 29 officers retired:

  • 20 IAS officers, including Chief Secretary Anurag Jain, though he received an extension.
  • 11 IPS officers, including the DGP, who also received a one-year service extension following the Supreme Court order on the two-year DGP tenure.
  • Special DG Pawan Srivastava retired this month.

These retirements mark a significant transition in Madhya Pradesh’s administrative and police hierarchy, requiring careful planning for replacements to ensure governance stability.

Implications for Governance

The upcoming retirements highlight the need for strategic succession planning in Madhya Pradesh. Filling key IAS and IPS positions promptly will be critical to maintaining law and order, administrative efficiency, and the continuation of development projects across the state.

Officials are closely monitoring eligible officers for the Chief Secretary, ADG Intelligence, IG Law and Order, and other high-priority positions to avoid any administrative vacuum.
