Thiruvananthapuram: Senior IPS officer M R Ajith Kumar, a 1995-batch officer of the Indian Police Service, has been appointed as the new Excise Commissioner of Kerala, the Chief Minister’s Office announced on Monday. Kumar, who is currently serving as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) in the Armed Police Battalions, will assume the new ex-cadre post with immediate effect.
He replaces Mahipal Yadav, IPS, who is currently on extended medical leave. According to the government order, Yadav has been granted commuted leave for 40 days, from July 22 to August 31, citing health reasons.
Appointment Amid Controversy
The appointment comes shortly after Ajith Kumar made headlines for a controversial tractor ride at Sabarimala, which attracted criticism from the Kerala High Court. While the incident stirred a public debate over protocol and conduct, the government’s decision to post Kumar in a crucial administrative position indicates continued confidence in his leadership.
Background and Role
M R Ajith Kumar is known for his previous stints in key law enforcement roles across Kerala and brings nearly three decades of policing experience to the Excise Department, which plays a critical role in enforcing liquor laws, curbing substance abuse, and ensuring compliance with excise regulations across the state.
His appointment is expected to add momentum to the state’s anti-narcotics and revenue protection efforts, which have been under increased focus in recent years.
