Leadership Updates: MTNL Appoints Sunil Kumar Ranjan as New Government Nominee Director

New Delh: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has announced the appointment of Mr. Sunil Kumar Ranjan, Deputy Director General (C&A), Department of Telecommunications (DoT), as a Government Nominee Director on its Board with effect from January 13, 2026.

The Board of Directors of MTNL has confirmed that Mr. Ranjan’s appointment will be valid for a period of three years, or until the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever occurs earlier.

Official Appointment and Tenure

Mr. Sunil Kumar Ranjan has been nominated by the Government of India to represent its interests on the MTNL Board. His appointment complies with all regulatory and governance requirements, and the company has confirmed that he is not debarred by SEBI or any other statutory authority from holding the position of director.

As part of his board responsibilities, Mr. Ranjan will also serve as a Member of the Audit Committee of MTNL. The company has clarified that he does not hold any shares in MTNL, either directly or beneficially, and no sitting fees will be payable to him for his role as Government Nominee Director.

Distinguished Career in Public Administration

Mr. Ranjan is a 1998-batch Central Secretariat Services (CSS) officer, selected through the Civil Services Examination. Over the course of his career, he has served in several key ministries and departments of the Government of India, gaining wide-ranging administrative and policy experience.

His postings include:

  • Ministry of Textiles
  • Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)
  • Ministry of Finance
  • Ministry of Women and Child Development
  • Staff Selection Commission (SSC)
  • Ministry of Mines
  • Department of Commerce
  • Ministry of Home Affairs
  • Department of Health Research
  • Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship
  • Inter-State Secretariat Council under the Ministry of Home Affairs

He is currently posted with the Department of Telecommunications, bringing sector-specific insight to his new role at MTNL.
