Mira Road, Mumbai: In a swift administrative reshuffle triggered by recent unrest, 1996 batch IPS officer Madhukar Pandey has been transferred out as the Police Commissioner of the Mira-Bhayandar-Vasai-Virar region. He has been replaced by IPS Niket Kaushik, currently serving as Additional Director General (ADG) of Police (Law & Order/Training).
Pandey has now been appointed as ADG (Administration) and will be attached to the state police headquarters in Mumbai. The Maharashtra government has issued orders for the transfer with immediate effect.
Transfer Follows Unrest During MNS Marathi Pride Rally
The move comes in the aftermath of a controversial Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) rally held on July 8, which was organised to assert Marathi linguistic identity. Though the Mira-Bhayandar police had denied permission for the march due to concerns over public safety, the MNS went ahead with the event, resulting in widespread tensions.
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, “Such transfers may seem routine on paper, but the timing indicates urgency to bring the situation under control.”
New Commissioner Known for Crisis Management
A senior official from the Home Department noted that the transfer was influenced by intelligence inputs and growing law and order concerns, especially after the June 28 incident in which a shopkeeper was allegedly assaulted for not speaking Marathi. The incident sparked protests from traders, which in turn led to the MNS’s counter-rally.
“A firm and seasoned officer like IPS Niket Kaushik is expected to bring stability and rebuild public confidence,” the official said.
Community Tensions and Calls for Balanced Policing
The MNS rally heightened linguistic and communal sensitivities in the region, with reports of tensions across Mira Road, Bhayandar, and Vasai-Virar. Residents and political commentators have questioned the police’s preparedness, with many urging the administration to adopt a more proactive and neutral approach.
Civic groups have called for inclusive dialogue to prevent further polarization, while others have criticized the apparent lack of coordination between intelligence inputs and ground enforcement.
