National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) announced on Thursday that it has finalized a mining lease deed with the Odisha state government for Bauxite mines located in Pottangi Tehsil of Koraput district. These mines, covering an area of 697.979 hectares, boast an impressive annual production capacity of 3.5 Million Tonnes (MT). With estimated reserves of 111 million tonnes, the mines are anticipated to sustain operations for 32 years.
“This strategic move ensures a secure supply of raw material for NALCO’s existing refinery and supports future expansions. With this enhanced resource base, NALCO is poised to strengthen its position in the Aluminum Industry, optimise production efficiency and meet the growing demand for Aluminum domestically and internationally,” said a spokesperson from NALCO.
The acquisition of these bauxite mines is expected to significantly enhance raw material availability for NALCO, facilitating its expansion plans. However, operational commencement is subject to obtaining remaining statutory clearances. Once operational, the mined bauxite will be transported to NALCO’s refinery at Damanjodi via an 18.5 km overland conveyor, ensuring streamlined logistical operations.
