India observed the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, remembering the supreme sacrifice and gallantry of its soldiers during the 1999 Kargil War. Victory Through Grit: Operation Vijay Remembered
The day marks the successful culmination of Operation Vijay, launched to drive out Pakistani intruders who had occupied key mountain positions in Kargil, Ladakh. After three months of intense combat in the high-altitude region, the Indian Army regained control of the strategic peaks, including Tiger Hill, Tololing, and Point 4875, on July 26, 1999. Since then, the date is commemorated as Kargil Vijay Diwas, honouring India’s military strength and spirit.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid floral tributes at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, calling the soldiers’ heroism a “timeless symbol” of India’s resolve.

Army Chief General Upender Dwivedi visited the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, where he honoured the martyrs and acknowledged the success of recent operations like Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure across the border.
The Indian Air Force also commemorated the day with a moving video tribute titled “The War Diary in Photographs”, highlighting the bravery of air warriors during Operation Safed Sagar—IAF’s pivotal air offensive during the war.

Emotional Homage by Families of the Fallen
At Lamochen Viewpoint in Drass, families of martyrs gathered in remembrance. Rajesh, brother of a soldier who fought at Tiger Hill, recalled:
“My brother lied to us, saying he wasn’t in combat. Later, we found his diary—he knew he wouldn’t return.”
Surekha Shinde, sister of another martyr, said with pride:
“Coming here fills me with gratitude. I thank the Army for honoring his sacrifice.”
Strategic and Symbolic Victory
The Kargil War, fought at altitudes over 18,000 feet, was a test of India’s military endurance. The victory not only reclaimed lost territory but also earned India global diplomatic acclaim for respecting the Line of Control (LoC) despite heavy provocations.
Operation Safed Sagar, launched by the IAF, marked the first large-scale use of air power in the region since 1971, demonstrating India’s technological and tactical superiority.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan hailed the indomitable courage of Indian soldiers, lauding the young officers who climbed near-vertical cliffs under enemy fire and led their troops to victory. He said their actions continue to inspire the armed forces.
