Hyderabad: The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has given a huge amount of money to  Andhra Pradesh to protect the famous Red Sanders  trees. This is great news for saving India’s rare plants and animals.

Details of NBA Efforts in Red Sanders Conservation in Andhra Pradesh

On November 21, 2025, the NBA announced that it had released ₹39.84 crore to Andhra Pradesh. This money is divided into two parts:

  • ₹38.36 crore goes to the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department
  • ₹1.48 crore goes to the Andhra Pradesh State Biodiversity Board

The ₹39.84 crore will be used for:

  • Forest Protection: Adding more guards and security in Red Sanders areas.
  • Surveillance Systems: Installing cameras and monitoring equipment.
  • Anti-Smuggling Operations: Stopping illegal cutting and trading.
  • Habitat Conservation: Protecting the forests where Red Sanders grow.
  • Awareness Programs: Teaching people about the importance of these trees.
  • Research Activities: Studying how to grow more Red Sanders trees.

This funding is part of India’s Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) program, which has now crossed ₹110 crore  in total.

This is one of the biggest releases of money for protecting nature in India.

What Are Red Sanders Trees?

Red Sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus) are very special trees known for their beautiful deep red wood. These trees are very rare and grow only in certain areas.

Where Do Red Sanders Grow?

Red Sanders trees grow naturally only in select parts of the Eastern Ghats  mountains, especially in these districts of Andhra Pradesh:

  • Anantapur
  • Chittoor
  • Kadapa
  • Prakasam
  • Kurnool

These trees cannot be found anywhere else in the world naturally, making them extremely valuable and endangered.

Red Sanders Conservation Andhra Pradesh: Why Are Red Sanders Important?

Red Sanders trees are precious for many reasons:

1. Rare and Unique: They grow only in India

2. Beautiful Wood: The deep red timber is highly valued

3. Cultural Value: Used in traditional crafts and medicines

4. Economic Value: Very expensive in international markets

5. Ecological Importance: Part of the Eastern Ghats ecosystem

The Smuggling Problem

Because Red Sanders wood is so valuable, many people try to cut and sell these trees illegally. ₹87.68 crore worth Red Sanders has already been used under proper rules with NBA’s permission.

However, smugglers often try to steal these trees and sell them in other countries. This is why the new funding is so important – it will help protect these rare trees from illegal cutting.

What Is Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) Program

The ABS program is India’s way of making sure that when someone uses natural resources (like plants or their products), the money earned is shared with:

  • The state government where the resource is found.
  • Local communities living in those areas.
  • Conservation programs to protect nature.

This ensures that protecting nature also helps local people and the environment.

India’s Biodiversity Conservation Milestone

With this release, India’s total ABS disbursements have crossed ₹110 crore. This is a major achievement in India’s efforts to protect its rich biodiversity.

Dr. Rajesh Gopal, an expert in wildlife conservation, said that this funding shows India’s serious commitment to protecting endangered species and their habitats.

Red Sanders Conservation Andhra Pradesh: Andhra Pradesh’s Role in Conservation

Andhra Pradesh has been working hard to protect Red Sanders for many years. The state has:

  • Created special protection forces
  • Set up check posts in forest areas
  • Used technology for monitoring
  • Worked with local communities

The new funding will make these efforts even stronger.

The Eastern Ghats Connection

The Eastern Ghats mountain range is home to many rare plants and animals. Red Sanders is one of the most important species in this region. By protecting Red Sanders, we also protect the entire forest ecosystem.

Expert View on Red Sanders Conservation Andhra Pradesh

Environmental experts appreciate this funding release. They believe that:

1. It will reduce Red Sanders smuggling significantly

2. Local communities will benefit from conservation work

3. More saplings can be planted to increase Red Sanders population

4. Better protection will encourage other rare species to thrive

Future Plans in Red Sanders Conservation Andhra Pradesh

The Andhra Pradesh Forest Department has announced plans to:

  • Plant more Red Sanders saplings in protected areas
  • Increase patrolling in sensitive zones
  • Use drone technology for forest monitoring
  • Create employment opportunities for local people in conservation work

Way Forward

With ₹39.84 crore now available, experts expect:

  • Significant reduction in smuggling within 2-3 years.
  • Increase in Red Sanders population through plantation drives.
  • Better livelihood opportunities for forest-dependent communities.
  • Stronger protection systems for other endangered species.
