NCL Conducts 3-Day Skill Development Program for Surface Miner Operators at CETI Singrauli

Training Enhances Technical Expertise, Operational Efficiency, and Safety Awareness for NCL’s Surface Mining Workforce
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a key subsidiary of Coal India Limited, successfully concluded a three-day Skill Development Programme for its Surface Miner Operators. The program was held from January 15 to 17, 2026, at the Central Excise Training Institute (CETI) in Singrauli, aiming to enhance technical expertise, operational efficiency, and safety awareness among operators handling high-capacity mining machinery.

Focus on Machine Fundamentals and Core Systems

The intensive training program was designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of Surface Miners, which are pivotal to NCL’s surface mining operations. Participants received detailed insights into machine fundamentals, including various types and capacities of Surface Miners and their major components such as the undercarriage, discharge conveyor, cutting drum, and tooling.

Sessions also focused on core systems like engines—with special emphasis on precautions to extend engine life—power train components, electrical and electronic systems, and hydraulics. Operators were trained on essential systems such as PTO mechanisms, steering, braking, and air systems to ensure smooth and safe operations.

Operational Mastery Through Hands-On Learning

A key highlight of the program was practical, hands-on training inside the operator’s cabin. Operators learned to master the instrument panel, controls, and gauges, as well as transmission systems, machine marching protocols, and advanced cutting and loading techniques. Special attention was given to maintaining operational safety and efficiency, even under challenging conditions such as rain or uneven terrain.

Enhancing Efficiency and Adaptability

The program emphasized operational efficiency and machine adaptability, equipping operators with techniques to maximize productivity, optimize machine placement, and execute safe operations in diverse mining conditions. The training also highlighted the strategic advantages of Surface Miners in modern mining, including higher output, precision cutting, and reduced manual intervention.

Expert Guidance and Industry Collaboration

The sessions were enriched by the guidance of industry specialists. Sri Prashant Mohan, Manager at L&T Constructions, along with his team, collaborated with NCL’s internal technical experts to provide field-based solutions and practical insights. Their involvement allowed participants to engage directly with professionals, enhancing both knowledge and practical skill application.

Participation and Impact

Approximately 12 Surface Miner Operators from various NCL mines actively participated in the program. The initiative reflects NCL’s ongoing commitment to workforce development, operational safety, and productivity enhancement. By investing in skill development for frontline operators, NCL aims to ensure optimal utilization of high-capacity equipment, leading to improved coal production outcomes and sustained operational excellence.
