The National Investigation Agency (NIA), India’s premier counter-terrorism organization, has adopted a new motto, “राष्ट्ररक्षणम् आद्यकर्तव्यम्” (Nation’s Protection is the First Duty). This significant milestone was made possible through Dr. Bhushan Kumar Upadhyaya, a retired IPS officer of the 1989 batch from Nagpur, Maharashtra.
The motto, unveiled by Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah on November 7, 2024, embodies the NIA’s mission to safeguard the nation against terrorism. In recognition of his pivotal role, the agency honoured Dr. Upadhyaya with a commemorative memento and a letter of gratitude from NIA Director General Mr. Sadanand Date (1991-batch IPS officer).
Dr. Upadhyaya was approached in April 2024 to help formulate a motto that reflects the NIA’s core values. His contribution has left a lasting impact, further solidifying the agency’s identity and purpose since its inception after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
The adoption of this motto marks a defining moment for the NIA, reaffirming its dedication to national security and its commitment to upholding the ideals of the nation.
