New Delhi: The race to lead India’s premier policy think tank has begun following the completion of B.V.R. Subrahmanyam’s tenure as Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog. After his extended tenure ended on February 23, 2026, the government moved quickly to appoint Nidhi Chhibber as interim chief, triggering intense speculation in the corridors of power over who will take charge permanently.
While the interim arrangement ensures continuity, indications suggest that the government may soon appoint a full-time successor from among serving Union Secretaries.
Interim Appointment After Subrahmanyam’s Exit
B. V. R. Subrahmanyam completed his extended tenure as CEO of NITI Aayog on February 23, 2026.
Soon after his departure, the government appointed Nidhi Chhibber as the interim chief on February 24 to ensure administrative continuity at the policy think tank.
Chhibber, a 1994-batch IAS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, is currently serving as Director General of the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) at NITI Aayog.
Speculation Over Permanent Appointment
Initially, there was speculation that the interim arrangement could eventually become permanent, with Chhibber potentially being regularised as the CEO.
However, fresh developments suggest that the government may have a different plan for the top post at the think tank.
Sources indicate that the leadership is exploring candidates from the current pool of Union Secretaries, signalling that the next CEO may come from among senior bureaucrats currently heading key ministries.
Focus on Serving Union Secretaries
According to insiders familiar with the developments, the government is actively evaluating serving Secretaries for the role.
The leading candidate for the position is reportedly scheduled to retire later this year, raising the possibility that the officer could be moved to NITI Aayog before completing their tenure as Secretary.
Such a move would allow the government to bring an experienced senior bureaucrat to head the think tank while ensuring continuity in policy coordination between ministries and the central government.
Strategic Importance of the Appointment
The choice of the next CEO of NITI Aayog will be significant, as the position plays a key role in shaping policy initiatives, monitoring flagship programmes, and coordinating development strategies between the Centre and states.
The final appointment will also provide insight into who will steer the strategic direction of the think tank in the coming years, especially as India navigates complex economic, technological, and governance challenges.
For now, with Nidhi Chhibber holding the interim charge, attention in New Delhi remains firmly focused on which senior bureaucrat will ultimately take over the influential role on a regular basis.
