New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s thermal energy infrastructure, Navratna PSU NLC India Limited (NLCIL) has expanded its coal-based generation capacity by 1660 MW through two joint ventures—NTPL in Tamil Nadu and NUPPL in Uttar Pradesh. This strategic enhancement raises NLCIL’s total installed power capacity to 6731 MW, cementing its position as a leading force in the nation’s power sector.
NTPL & NUPPL Lead Capacity Expansion
The Tuticorin-based NTPL (Neyveli Tamil Nadu Power Limited), a joint venture between NLCIL and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO), has added 1000 MW through its 2 x 500 MW coal-fired thermal power plant. Operational for several years, the plant continues to play a critical role in meeting Tamil Nadu’s power demands and stabilizing the southern grid.
Further north, in Ghatampur, Uttar Pradesh, NLCIL’s joint venture with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL)—NUPPL (Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited)—has marked a significant milestone by commissioning one 660 MW supercritical thermal unit. This state-of-the-art facility represents NLCIL’s foray into high-efficiency, low-emission thermal technology.

First Thermal Addition of FY26
The Ghatampur plant became commercially operational in December 2024 and is noteworthy as the first fossil-fuel-based thermal addition in FY 2025–26. The commissioning of this unit marks a strategic move toward balancing renewable integration with base-load reliability.
Both plants not only enhance regional energy security but also contribute to national grid stability, aligning with the government’s infrastructure and energy sufficiency goals.
With this latest expansion, NLCIL’s total capacity has grown from 6071 MW to 6731 MW. The PSU now stands as a key player in India’s push for power security through diversified energy generation.
