Lucknow: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Renuka Mishra (IPS:1990:UP), a highly regarded officer of Director General (DG) rank, is reportedly considering voluntary retirement (VRS) after spending over a year without a formal posting. Sources indicate that Mishra may take a final decision by the end of July 2025.
Though she is scheduled to retire on January 31, 2026, the extended absence of a meaningful assignment has likely prompted her to explore an early exit from service.
No Active Posting Since March 2024
Ms Mishra last held the position of Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board. However, she was removed from the post in the aftermath of the constable recruitment paper leak scandal, which sparked widespread criticism and embarrassment for the state government.
Following her removal, she was placed on a waiting list starting March 5, 2024, where she remained until July 18, 2024. Since then, she has only been attached to the office of the Director General of Police (DGP), Uttar Pradesh, without being assigned any active responsibilities – a highly unusual situation for an officer of her seniority and stature.
A Year in Administrative Limbo
Being sidelined for over a year has raised questions within bureaucratic circles, particularly considering Ms Mishra’s clean track record and seniority. Sources close to the development say that the extended lack of a substantive role has taken a professional and personal toll, influencing her decision to consider VRS before the end of her service tenure.
Currently, her status remains unofficial, with no formal confirmation of VRS filed, but her deliberations are said to be at an advanced stage.
Family Connection: A Retirement Year for the Mishras
Adding to the speculation is the recent retirement of her husband, Aditya Mishra (IPS:1989:UP), who superannuated on June 30, 2025, after serving as Director General, Fire Services. With both officers reaching the final chapters of their careers, observers note that her decision could also be influenced by personal timing and family considerations.
