The Noida International Airport, coming up in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is on track to become operational by November 2025, as confirmed by Uttar Pradesh Industrial Development Minister Mr. Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’. With over 80% of construction completed, the project is now entering its final stretch and is being hailed as a landmark development that will boost connectivity and economic growth in northern India.
Phased Rollout and Revised Timeline
Originally scheduled for completion by September 2024, the airport’s operational timeline was pushed back due to delays in terminal construction and multi-agency approvals. As per the revised plan, domestic and cargo flight operations are expected to begin by mid-September 2025, with full-scale international services launching in November 2025. The runway and airside infrastructure have already surpassed 90% completion.
Critical Approvals and Infrastructure
Key approvals from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) are awaited. A joint inspection by DGCA, BCAS, and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) was scheduled in May 2025. Once cleared, Noida International Airport Ltd (NIAL) is set to kick-start phased operations.
Strategic Connectivity and Capacity
Situated 75 km from Delhi’s IGI Airport and just 52 km from Noida, the airport is designed to serve over 12 million passengers annually in its first phase, with projections rising to 70 million by 2040–2050. With a catchment area of over 80 million people, it is expected to be the fourth-largest airport globally in both area and passenger capacity.
World-Class Features and Sustainability
The airport will include a multimodal Ground Transportation Center integrating metro, buses, and high-speed rail. A rail link will connect Delhi and the airport in just 21 minutes. The terminal design reflects North Indian heritage and promotes energy efficiency. Environmentally, over 580 trees have been relocated, and an eight-acre green buffer zone has been developed.
Economic Impact and Investment
With a total project investment of Rs. 34,000 crore, the airport is one of India’s largest infrastructure ventures. The first phase alone has an allocation of Rs. 10,056 crore. Swiss developer Zurich Airport International AG is spearheading the project under a 40-year concession agreement.
A dedicated cargo hub, in collaboration with Air India SATS, will handle over 100,000 tons annually, bolstering India’s logistics and trade capabilities, especially in western Uttar Pradesh.
Way Ahead
Noida International Airport is not just a transportation project — it is a transformative force that promises to reshape India’s aviation, economic, and logistics landscape. With its November 2025 launch in sight, the airport is set to become a global aviation landmark, strengthening India’s position in the global aviation sector and fueling regional development.
