NTPC Limited, the state-run power giant, has teamed up with the Assam Forest Department to launch an awareness campaign in honor of Wildlife Week, which is celebrated annually from October 2 to 8. This initiative is part of NTPC’s broader efforts to promote wildlife conservation and environmental sustainability.

On Saturday, NTPC’s Bongaigaon unit partnered with the Divisional Forest Office (DFO) of Kokrajhar district to conduct a day-long awareness event at Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary, situated within the Choraikhola Forest Range. According to a company statement, the programme aimed to educate local communities, school students, and villagers about the critical importance of wildlife conservation, while also emphasizing the unique biodiversity of the Chakrashila Sanctuary.

As part of the event, quiz and drawing competitions were held for 160 students to encourage environmental awareness and spark interest in protecting wildlife. The sanctuary, known for its rich flora and fauna, is home to the golden langur, 119 bird species, various mammals, 23 reptile species, and over 40 species of butterflies.

NTPC Bongaigaon Head of Project Akhilesh Singh highlighted the company’s sustainability efforts, noting that they had already planted 2.5 lakh trees in the region as part of their commitment to eco-friendly practices. He emphasized that such initiatives not only benefit the environment but also build strong connections between NTPC and the local communities.

Recently, NTPC Bongaigaon, in collaboration with the Indian Army, conducted a large-scale afforestation drive, planting 62,000 saplings in Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary. Spread over 45.57 sq km in the Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts, the sanctuary plays a vital role in preserving the region’s biodiversity, particularly as the second protected habitat for the endangered golden langur in India.
