Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: NTPC Limited, India’s largest power generation company, announced that its shareholders have approved the reappointment of Gurdeep Singh as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) for an additional one-year term beyond his scheduled superannuation.

Shareholders Back Extension at AGM

At the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on August 29, a significant 95.20% of shareholders (5,307 voters) endorsed Singh’s continuation, while 4.80% (678 voters) voted against the resolution. This reappointment ensures Singh remains at the helm of NTPC until July 31, 2026.

Backed by Cabinet Committee After PESB Could Not Find Suitable Successor

Earlier, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) had cleared his reappointment on a contractual basis for one year following the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB)’s failure to find a suitable replacement. Despite interviewing a dozen candidates—six internal and six from other PSUs—PESB concluded that no applicant met the required benchmarks for the top post.

In response, the Power Ministry proposed re-employment of Gurdeep Singh, which the ACC approved, extending his leadership for another year post-retirement on July 31, 2025.

Long-Standing Leadership

Gurdeep Singh has been serving as CMD of NTPC since February 2016. Under his leadership, NTPC has expanded aggressively into renewables, hydrogen, battery storage, and global partnerships, making strides in India’s clean energy transition. His tenure is widely credited for streamlining operations, improving generation capacity, and maintaining NTPC’s strong financial performance despite sector challenges.
