New Delhi: NTPC Limited, India’s largest power generation public sector undertaking (PSU), has announced the successful trial operation of Unit-3 (660 MW) of the North Karanpura Super Thermal Power Project in Jharkhand. With this, the company’s total installed capacity now stands at 60,266 MW on a standalone basis and 81,368 MW on a group level.
The newly commissioned unit is part of the 3×660 MW (1,980 MW) supercritical plant, which marks a significant addition to India’s energy infrastructure. This development underscores NTPC’s commitment to scaling up power generation capacity to meet the country’s growing electricity demand while embracing innovative, resource-efficient technologies.
A Milestone in Sustainable Power Generation
The North Karanpura project is India’s first supercritical thermal power plant to adopt air-cooled condenser (ACC) technology, a notable shift from conventional water-cooled systems. This approach reduces water consumption by nearly two-thirds, making it a more sustainable option in water-scarce regions.
The project was developed with an investment of ₹4,609 crore and is a vital part of NTPC’s strategy to increase output with minimal environmental impact.
- Unit-1 of the plant began commercial operations on March 1, 2023
- Unit-2 followed on March 3, 2024
- Unit-3 has now completed trial operations as of June 2025

Strategic Significance
This commissioning not only supports NTPC’s mission to expand its generation footprint but also contributes to the stability and reliability of India’s power grid. As India continues its rapid infrastructure growth, especially in industrial and rural electrification sectors, such capacity additions will play a critical role in energy security.
NTPC continues to maintain a dominant presence across the power generation value chain – encompassing coal-based, gas, hydro, renewable, and nuclear energy – further solidifying its role as a cornerstone of India’s energy economy.
