NTPC Green Energy Crosses 8 GW Capacity with Commissioning of 13.98 MW Khavda Solar Project in Gujarat

Commercial operation of the Khavda-I Solar PV unit takes NGEL’s total renewable capacity to 8,010.28 MW, marking a key milestone in NTPC’s clean energy expansion strategy.
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), the renewable energy subsidiary of India’s largest power producer NTPC Ltd, has achieved a major milestone by crossing 8 gigawatts (GW) of installed renewable energy capacity. The achievement comes with the declaration of commercial operation of a 13.98 MW solar power unit at its Khavda-I Solar PV Project in Gujarat.

This latest addition strengthens NTPC’s leadership position in India’s rapidly growing clean energy sector and reflects the company’s steady progress toward its long-term renewable energy goals.

Small Addition, Big Milestone

Although the newly commissioned capacity is just under 14 MW, it played a crucial role in pushing the NGEL Group’s total installed capacity from 7,996.30 MW to 8,010.28 MW, officially taking the company past the significant 8,000 MW (8 GW) mark.

Crossing this threshold highlights NTPC’s consistent execution strategy, where even incremental additions contribute meaningfully to larger national and corporate renewable energy targets.

Khavda-I Solar PV Project: A Key Renewable Hub

The new solar unit is part of the Khavda-I Solar PV Project, located in the Kutch region of Gujarat, an area known for high solar radiation and ideal conditions for large-scale solar generation.

Key project details include:

  • Location: Khavda, Kutch district, Gujarat
  • Developer: NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NREL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NGEL
  • Project Size: Part of a larger 1,255 MW solar project being commissioned in phases

The newly added 13.98 MW capacity began commercial operations at 00:00 hours on December 30, 2025, with power successfully injected into the national grid.

Boost to Government’s Clean Energy Mission

The Khavda project is being developed under the CPSU Phase-II scheme, which promotes the use of domestically manufactured solar modules. This initiative supports India’s goal of strengthening local manufacturing while accelerating the transition to renewable energy.

By advancing large-scale solar projects like Khavda, NTPC is playing a vital role in helping India reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy security, and move closer to its climate commitments.

NTPC’s Long-Term Renewable Vision

The parent company, NTPC Ltd, has set an ambitious target of achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032. The latest milestone at Khavda represents another important step toward fulfilling this vision and expanding India’s green power infrastructure at scale.

About NTPC Green Energy Limited

NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) is the renewable energy arm of NTPC Ltd, focusing on solar, wind, and hybrid power projects across India. With over 8 GW of installed capacity, NGEL is one of the country’s leading renewable energy developers and a key contributor to India’s clean energy transition.
