New Delhi: NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Assago Industries Private Limited to support the production of green urea using sustainable energy inputs. The agreement was signed at NTPC Bhawan, New Delhi, marking a significant step towards decarbonizing India’s fertilizer and agriculture sectors.
Strategic Collaboration for Green Urea Production
Under the MoU, NGEL will supply Green Ammonia, captured Carbon Dioxide (CO₂), Renewable Energy (RE) power, and other associated utilities to Assago Industries for its proposed green urea manufacturing facility.
The collaboration aims to enable environment-friendly urea production, replacing fossil fuel-based inputs with renewable alternatives in line with India’s clean energy goals.
Key Project Details: 1,000 TPD Green Urea Plant
- Production Capacity: 1,000 tonnes per day (TPD) of green urea
- Project Location: NGEL Green Hydrogen Hub, Pudimadaka (near Visakhapatnam), Andhra Pradesh
- Energy Source: Green Ammonia and renewable power
- Carbon Management: Use of captured CO₂ in the production process
The plant is expected to significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with conventional urea manufacturing, which typically depends on natural gas.
Alignment with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission
The project aligns closely with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, supporting India’s transition to low-carbon industrial processes. By integrating green hydrogen derivatives and renewable energy, the initiative promotes sustainable agriculture while reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.
Why the Partnership Matters
Boost to Sustainable Agriculture
Green urea production helps lower greenhouse gas emissions and supports environmentally responsible farming practices.
Circular Green Economy
The use of captured CO₂ and green ammonia demonstrates an integrated approach to emissions reduction and resource efficiency.
Strengthening Aatmanirbhar Bharat
Domestic production of green urea reduces dependence on global fertilizer markets and protects against price volatility.
Industrial Synergy at Pudimadaka Hub
NGEL’s Green Hydrogen Hub at Pudimadaka is emerging as a plug-and-play ecosystem for green chemical and energy-intensive industries.
Industry Participation and Leadership
The MoU signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from NTPC, NTPC Green Energy Limited, and Assago Industries, underscoring the strategic importance of the partnership in advancing India’s renewable energy and green manufacturing ambitions.
