New Delhi/Vienna: In a strategic move to align with India’s 2070 net-zero emissions target, NTPC Ltd, the country’s largest integrated energy company, has signed an agreement with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), a Vienna-based international organization working under the aegis of the United Nations. The collaboration aims to accelerate NTPC’s clean energy transition and support India’s broader climate and energy security goals.
SEforALL to Develop NTPC’s Energy Transition Roadmap
Under the agreement, SEforALL will provide technical and strategic assistance to NTPC to create a comprehensive energy transition roadmap. This plan will explore various clean energy pathways across short, medium, and long-term time horizons.
The roadmap will include–
- Scenario modelling to evaluate transition options
- Investment assessments to understand capital needs
- Diversification strategies across energy sources
- Socio-economic analysis to gauge development impact
The collaboration is expected to ensure that NTPC’s transition is not only environmentally sound but also socially inclusive and economically viable.
NTPC’s Expanding Clean Energy Portfolio
NTPC has been a key player in India’s industrial and energy development since its founding in 1975. While the majority of its installed capacity still comes from thermal sources, the company is aggressively expanding into renewables. It is already leading in the deployment of–
- Green hydrogen pilot projects
- Floating solar photovoltaic (FSPV) systems
- Battery energy storage systems (BESS)
- Pumped storage hydropower
- Carbon capture and utilization (CCU)
NTPC has pledged to install 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, becoming the first major Indian utility to commit to a UN Energy Compact in 2021. It now contributes nearly 25% of India’s electricity generation, making it a cornerstone of the nation’s energy security.
Leadership Remarks on the Agreement
Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC, emphasized the significance of the partnership – “Our aim is to foster responsible, sustainable economic development through an energy strategy that champions energy security, social inclusiveness, environmental stewardship, and growth powered by data, technology, and innovation. This agreement positions us to meet the rising demand from communities and industry while keeping us at the leading edge of the energy transition.”
Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO of SEforALL and UN Special Representative for Sustainable Energy, praised the collaboration – “India continues to show climate leadership on the global stage, moving beyond commitments to concrete actions. We are excited to support NTPC to co-create a net zero roadmap for the energy giant of India. I laud NTPC for its commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy sources.”
Implications for India’s Climate Commitments
This agreement reflects India’s growing momentum in climate action and energy reform. With NTPC playing a leadership role, the partnership sets a powerful example of how large public-sector enterprises can align business strategy with environmental responsibility and national priorities.
