Pressure Mounts on IAS Officer Santosh Verma Amid Promotion Controversy in Madhya Pradesh

Employee unions and community organizations demand action, while government treads carefully amid rising tribal and Brahmin community tensions
Indian Masterminds Stories

Bhopal: Intense pressure has mounted on IAS officer Santosh Verma, president of the Madhya Pradesh SC-ST Officers and Employees Association (AJAX), as multiple political parties, employee groups, and community organizations demand action against him. Both BJP and Congress lawmakers, typically on opposing sides, have joined forces with employee unions in pressing the state government for accountability in what has become a high-profile controversy.

BJP MPs Demand Investigation

BJP MPs Janardan Mishra and Alok Sharma have written to the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, demanding action against Verma and an investigation into his alleged irregular promotion. The move has escalated scrutiny at both state and central levels.

Government Notice and Response Timeline

Verma has been served a notice by the Madhya Pradesh government and is required to respond by Thursday. He has been given a seven-day period to submit his reply, after which departmental action may be initiated. The Ministry Service Officers-Employees Association stated that their next steps would depend on the government’s response following Verma’s submission.

Community Groups Raise Protests

Meanwhile, Brahmin organizations have warned that they may escalate protests if a formal FIR is not filed against Verma. These organizations have also been in touch with social groups from other states to potentially stage larger demonstrations in Madhya Pradesh.

Tribal Support and Government Caution

The state government is taking cautious measures, mindful of the delicate social dynamics involved. Officials are reportedly trying to avoid turning the controversy into a conflict framed as tribal versus Brahmin. In support of Verma, several tribal organizations have come forward, including groups from the Malwa region, who have already staged demonstrations in Indore.

Possible Central Inquiry

Reports suggest that the central government may also conduct inquiries regarding Verma’s promotion, with the Union Ministry potentially seeking explanations from the Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary. The controversy comes at a politically sensitive time, with the state assembly session scheduled to continue until December 5, 2025.

Significance of the Controversy

The case highlights the growing influence of employee associations, caste-based organizations, and political stakeholders in administrative oversight and promotion matters, as the government seeks to maintain balance while addressing public and political pressure.
